The Duchess of Sussex has been an advocate for women’s rights ever since she was a child, when she wrote to Proctor and Gamble to complain about a sexist advert for Ivory Soap. She later became a UN Women advocate for Political Leadership and Participation, speaking passionately about the rights of women all over the world. This year, she spoke about how the coronavirus pandemic has disproportionately affected women economically.

However, Meghan has not been immune to sexism and objectification in her own life and career.

One of her first gigs in Hollywood was being a ‘briefcase girl’ on the US version of Deal or No Deal, a game show where contestants choose whether to gamble on unknown fortunes inside briefcases or make a deal with the ‘banker’ for a compromise prize.

There are 26 models, each wearing matching, sexually provocative outfits and each holding one of the briefcases.

Meghan was one of these models for the second series of the show in 2006.

After landing a main role in the TV legal drama Suits in 2011, Meghan shot up in the world, and more opportunities started coming her way but she was still subject to objectification on occasion.

Her well-documented love of food landed her a gig with Men’s Health Magazine in 2013.

They filmed an interview for their website in which they asked Meghan to give them the secret to a great burger and steak.

According to the book ‘Meghan: A Hollywood Princess’, it was “sweet, unpolished and very natural”.

She told them that, as a California girl, she preferred fish tacos, but for a quick meal “for her man” she would throw a steak on the grill.

However, Meghan also agreed to film a “racier” version of the same shoot, which appeared two years later.

In this version, she played on her role in Suits, wearing a short leather skirt and “power blazer”, with her hair in a bun and donning sunglasses.

In the video, as she grilled a steak, she unbuttoned her sheer black top to reveal a spotted bra.

The film’s title read: “Grilling never looked so hot.”

Royal biographer Andrew Morton wrote: “As the steak smouldered, so did Meghan, but there was a hesitancy in her eyes.

“She was playing up to the camera, but she seemed uncomfortable, conscious she was portraying herself as a sex object to be leered at by men.

“She thought she’d left those days behind on the set of Deal or No Deal.

“As far as she was concerned, this wasn’t a part she was going to play for much longer.”

Meghan played Rachel Zane in Suits for seven seasons, before quitting to marry into the Royal Family.

She and Prince Harry tied the knot in May 2018 and spent a year and a half as working members of the family.

However, they stepped down last year and moved to the US to start a new life together.

They have two children, Archie Harrison and Lilibet Diana, their daughter being born just a month ago.

‘Meghan: A Hollywood Princess’ was written by Andrew Morton and published by Michael O’Mara in 2018. It is available here.
