Meghan Markle’s former hairdresser has spoken glowingly about the Duchess of Sussex, including her “great sense of humour”. George Northwood, the London-based stylist who boasts an impressive client list, said his favourite memory of the royal was when she played a fun birthday prank on him.

The hairdresser, who has his own salon in London’s Fitzrovia, worked with Meghan for two years and helped craft her statement messy bun and polished ponytail.

Speaking with fondness about the Duchess, he said she had a “great sense of humour” and the pair got along well.

When discussing his fondest memory of the royal, he recalled the time she jumped out to surprise him for his birthday.

He said the prank, which saw Prince Harry also join in, “frightened him half to death”.

Mr Northwood told Grazia magazine: “It was such a silly moment but so sweet that they wanted to surprise me.

“Meghan has a great sense of humour so we would always be in fits of giggles.”

The hairdresser, who styles model Rosie Huntington-Wiley, presenter Claudia Winkleman and writer Alexa Chung, described the Duchess as “so grounded”, “fun” and “one of the most caring, genuine and warm people”.

Mr Northwood also went into detail about Meghan’s look and said she took time deciding the intricate details of her appearance.

He described her look as “effortless” and his favourite look was at the British Fashion Awards in 2018, when she was heavily pregnant with son, baby Archie.

The hairdresser said: “Her hair often looks so effortless but she’s actually the most thoughtful person, even down to the smallest detail like her jewellery.

“We worked together for two years – and I hope to continue whenever she’s back in the UK.

“[We were] collaborating to create the effortlessly cool buns that she wears as well as the sleek, polished hair, such as her style at the British Fashion Awards in 2018 – my favourite look we’ve ever done.”

He added: “It’s funny, because her hair often looks so effortless but she’s actually the most thoughtful person, even down to the smallest detail like her jewellery.”

In the interview, Mr Northwood said he was initially quite nervous before working with Meghan, but she quickly made him feel comfortable.

He said: “She and Harry are both very grounded and easy to talk to, plus Meghan and I had some common ground in my passion for Southern California.”

The hairdresser said the pair quickly became quite close and a real friendship ensued.

He said: “You really feel like you are a part of their team.

“What they stand for is so strong and inspiring, and they’re genuinely such kind people who really want to do good, so that rubs off a little bit – you feel part of something exciting.”
