Meghan was ‘not prepared’ for royal life as she failed to grasp ‘obvious’ fact

Meghan Markle and Harry: How Queen decided on a ‘hard Megxit’

Meghan Markle “wasn’t prepared” for the “obvious” realities of royal life, an author has claimed.

Tom Quinn’s post-mortem analysis comes more than two years after Prince Harry and his wife Meghan decided to step down from royal duties.

The couple initially cited media scrutiny and the strictures of their roles as the reasons for ‘Megxit’, but would later provide darker explanations through their various media pursuits.

Most controversial of all was the insinuation that the monarchy is an inherently racist institution and therefore did not fully accept Meghan into the fold.

The suggestion was made during the now-infamous TV interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, where Meghan implied a member of the family was racist towards her.

The Sussexes would later expand on this theme in their Netflix documentary, released last year.

However, in an exclusive interview with Daily Express US, Quinn, the author of Gilded Youth: An Intimate History of Growing Up in the Royal Family, provides an alternative explanation for Megxit.

According to Mr Quinn, Meghan experienced a culture shock when she became a Duchess.

“Meghan comes from a society where if you’re talented and driven, you can get to the top,” he explained.

However, as the royal author points out, an inherited monarchy is somewhat antithetical to the meritocratic ideal that forms the bedrock of America.

“She just wasn’t prepared. She didn’t realise this,” Mr Quinn claimed.

The royal author claims Meghan naively thought she could forge her own destiny within the Firm.

“It’s obvious when you think about it, but I think she thought she could come into the Royal Family and be the star.”

He continued: “And of course, she [Meghan] couldn’t because the monarchical structures are medieval, they’re rigid.”

Harry and Meghan were also unable to change their place in the pecking order, which probably made up their minds, the royal author said.

“You can’t change the fact that William and Kate are number one,” Mr Quinn added.

Whatever lies at the heart of Harry and Meghan’s decision to start a new life in America, it has been a lucrative one.

The couple struck multi-million-pound deals with streaming giants Netflix and Spotify shortly after moving stateside.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are also said to have spent a whopping £3 million on the movie rights to a best-selling book.
