Some 696 made the journey in 14 boats, while French authorities halted one vessel at sea with 35 on board. Monday’s newcomers were taken to Ramsgate in Kent, rather than Dover.

The record for migrant arrivals in one day is November 11, 2021, when 1,185 people arrived in 33 boats.

The latest arrivals bring the total for the year to 17,095, a figure that was not reached until September last year.

It comes after the Government admitted that July was a record month for 2022, with 3,683 crossings.

Both Tory leadership candidates say they intend to stick with the deterrent policy of sending migrants to Rwanda.

A Government spokeswoman said: “The New Plan for Immigration is reforming our broken asylum system.”
