Health Secretary Sajid Javid said that the coronavirus era and its restrictions were the exceptions and not the rule and that he hopes people did not get used to it as it is not the “new normal”. Mr Javid labelled the pandemic as “extraordinary” as it severely impacted people’s mental health and income. He pointed out that if the Government has now decided to move on from the pandemic once and for all by lifting all the restrictions it is down to the foundations that were laid when COVID-19 peaked and with it the casualties and hospitalisations.

A guest on Julia Hartley-Brewer’s show on talkRADIO, he said: “We must never lose sight of the fact that the restrictions were extraordinary.

“To restrict people’s freedom in a way that was done, and having an impact that is much more broader than on public’s health, for example children’s education, opportunities, the impact on people’s livelihood and other of course non-Covid health issues around mental health for example.

“These were extraordinary times and they should never have become something that anyone should think is gonna be the new normal, of course not.”

The Health Secretary also stated that as soon as politicians felt that the timing was right to scrap the restrictions they did just that.

He said: “The moment we could get rid of them we did.

“The reasons why we could take the decision that we’ve taken now is because of the decisions we made in the past.

“When I first became Health Secretary eight months ago I said that we have to learn to live with Covid.

“We have to look at it as something like flu and just to learn to deal with it in society.

“We took a decision at the start of summer to open up.

“And like any other countries in Europe, it’s because of decisions like that.

“And the decisions to focus on boosters and not to lockdown over the Christmas period, we are in the fortunate position we are.”

Britons are now reaping the rewards for showing resilience and Mr Javid said that England are now in a “much better position”.

He said: “And I can tell you this, speaking to my European counterpart I’d not trade my position with any of them.

“Because of the decision we’ve made and the efforts of British people we’re in a much better position.”
