A police officer has been seriously injured in a crash during an attempt to stop a car on the M62.
Officers were attempting to stop the vehicle on the eastbound carriageway as it entered the Humberside area at 11.24pm on Friday.
West Yorkshire Police said there was a collision between the Seat Ibiza and two police cars – one of which veered off the carriageway and smashed into a bridge stanchion.
One police officer suffered serious leg injuries and had to be cut free from his vehicle by firefighters.
He was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but non-life threatening condition.
Four people in the Seat were arrested and remain in custody, police said.
Three of them were injured with one suffering from neck and back injuries while two others suffered minor injuries.
Due to the nature of the incident the Independent Office for Police Conduct has been notified, the force added.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Selby had responded to the crash along with an appliance from Goole.
Two of the men in the Seat had left the car when the brigade arrived, but the fire service said the other two men had to be cut free.
Highways England said it was able to open the westbound carriageway early on Saturday and the eastbound carriageway remained closed until about 4pm on Saturday.
