Delivery slots for online buying were in short supply too, with customers’ hopes of receiving an order before Christmas dwindling as stores were hit by freight chaos in Dover and last-minute changes to Christmas plans for millions. Major supermarkets and the Government urged consumers across Britain to pick up only what they needed insisting there would not be shortages before Christmas Day.

Tesco last night introduced limits on some purchases including eggs, rice, soap and toilet rolls.

The restrictions are to make sure everyone has the chance of buying in-demand items, the chain’s bosses said in an email to customers.

Shoppers are allowed to buy up to three of each product.

Tesco said it has “good stock levels” and urged its customers to “shop as you normally would”.
