The Cliffords, based in the village of Feock, have covered their home in lights for more than 20 years. The display has been lighting up the neighbourhood since 1996 and sees people come from miles away to view it. But this year, they won’t be able to go ahead with it as a result of orders from a local housing officer.

An officer for Cornwall Housing, owned by Cornwall Council, visited the property, telling the couple, Roger and Elizabeth Clifford, that they were not able to do it anymore.

Cornwall Housing owns the land surrounding the property.

Mr Clifford said the officer cited “ridiculous health and safety reasons, slippery grass”.

The 73-year-old said: “We have had no problems from anyone else previously but a new housing officer has come in and told us no.

“We are just wound-up really and gobsmacked.”

Local residents, who have viewed the display each year for more than two decades, were furious at the decision.

Responding to the news, Helen Dunn wrote: “The council worker must be on this year’s naughty list so he’s spoiling it for everyone else too.”

While Tracey Bickle said: “The world has gone mad. It’s once a year for goodness sake.”

Kevin Tregunna hit out the “nanny state”, saying: “The world revolves around health and safety.”

Helen Parkyn added: “Seriously ….. I’d tell the said housing officer he’ll be the new fairy on the tree if he doesn’t back off. How utterly ridiculous.”

Meanwhile, other residents encouraged the couple to ignore the council’s advice.

Barry Clift urged the couple to “please put them up”, saying: “You must put your decorations up and defy this jumped councillor and the council.

“If they don’t give you a good enough reason to hell with them.

“The councillor should be named and shamed.”

Sonia Penny said: “What a grotty housing officer surprised he hasn’t cancelled Christmas totally.

“I would put it up as everyone loves it and that those around love it. Wonder if he goes around to every house telling them they can’t do decorations etc. A real-life scrouge.”

Liz Roseveare added: “Bloody jobsworth councillor, miserable g**. Put the lights up, I’m sure everyone will support them.”

Cornwall Housing was contacted for comment.
