The Duke of York headed to the royal Scottish retreat with ex-wife Sarah Ferguson on Tuesday. But his dog arrived in its own car an hour earlier, Metro reports.

Andrew bolted to Balmoral, where the Queen has started her annual summer holiday, with his former wife, the Duchess of York.

The monarch is traditionally joined by members of the Royal Family for her summer break in Scotland every year.

Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank were also seen arriving on Wednesday with their baby son August.

Andrew’s arrival follows Virginia Giuffre’s decision to sue him for alleged sexual assault.

Ms Giuffre claims she was trafficked by the Duke’s former friend and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein when a 17-year-old to have sex with the royal.

And she claimed it was “long past the time for him to be held to account”.

Ms Giuffre’s lawsuit stated: “In this country no person, whether president or prince, is above the law, and no person, no matter how powerless or vulnerable, can be deprived of the law’s protection.

“Twenty years ago Prince Andrew’s wealth, power, position, and connections enabled him to abuse a frightened, vulnerable child with no one there to protect her. It is long past the time for him to be held to account.”

Lawyers for Ms Giuffre filed the civil suit seeking unspecified damages at a federal court in New York.

Andrew has always vehemently denied the allegations.

In his Newsnight interview in November 2019, the Duke denied claims that he slept with Ms Giuffre on three separate occasions, saying: “I can absolutely categorically tell you it never happened. I have no recollection of ever meeting this lady, none whatsoever.”

Andrew also said he has no memory of a photo of him with his arm around Ms Giuffre’s waist, thought to be at Epstein’s former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell’s house, and has questioned whether it was his own hand in the image.

Royal expert Joe Little said the legal action was a further blow to Andrew’s reputation and the standing of the monarchy.

The managing editor of Majesty Magazine said: “It’s damaging not only for Andrew but for the institution of the monarchy itself because all sorts of allegations have been thrown at the institution since all this came to light – and the perception is, most likely incorrectly, they are not taking it seriously.

“While the legality and situation itself haven’t really moved on at all, in terms of his working royal role that has shifted significantly and it’s hard to see how he can resume life as a working member of the Royal Family.”

Andrew stepped back from public duties following a backlash over his TV interview.

Mr Little added: “I can’t think any kind of rehabilitation that will bring him back into the royal fold as a working member of the family.”
