Prince George, 7, and Prince Louis, 3, will one day be expected to follow in the footsteps of their father and grandfather by undertaking a stint in the British military. It has long been a tradition of the Royal Family to enter active service with the army. Although it is not a requirement for the heir to the throne, it is widely encouraged for male members of the family to enlist in the ranks of service.
TheThings narrator Carmen Sandi said: “Prince William joined the Army, Prince Charles joined the Navy and Prince Harry served in the Air Force.
“If you’re sensing a theme, you’d be absolutely right. Men in the Royal Family aren’t just encouraged to join the military, it’s expected of them.
“They may not have to worry about that now, with George and Louis still being as young as they are but, eventually, this is something they will have to consider doing as they get older.
Prince William served for 7 years in the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. He was promoted to Flight Lieutenant in 2009 and went on to a full-time role with the Royal Air Force Service.
As the heir to the throne, there were doubts as to whether he would be allowed to see any combat. However, in 2008 he participated in a £40m drug seize near Barbados and oversaw hundreds of rescue missions as an Air Force pilot.
A 2018 statement from Kensington Palace stated that during his time as a pilot, Prince William had undertaken a total of 156 search and rescue operations, rescuing 149 people.
He retired from the military in 2013 and went on the work with the East Anglian Air Ambulance before committing his life to public service.
His brother Prince Harry also served in the British Air Force and undertook two deployments to Afghanistan.
The Duke of Sussex later went on the found the Invictus Games, a Paralympic-style sporting event for injured servicemen and women.
As the Sovereign, the Queen is Head of the Armed Forces. Many members of the Royal Family hold military appointments and patronages, including Kate Middleton who is Patron of the Royal Air Force Cadets.
The Prince of Wales also served in both the Royal Air Force and the Navy.
The Queen herself enlisted in the Auxiliary Territorial Service in 1945, where she was trained to drive and maintain vehicles. Both the Queen and her sister Princess Margaret were heavily involved in boosting the spirits of the armed forces during the Second World War.

The Queen’s late husband, the Duke of Edinburgh saw active service during the war as a naval cadet and was present in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrendered.
He was later appointed Admiral of the Fleet and Field Marshal of the Royal Air Force, amongst several other military positions.
His funeral on April 17, 2021, reflected his long dedication to the British Army and highlighted his links to the Navy.
The two young Princes are currently third and fifth-in-line to the throne. When Prince George becomes King, he will automatically become Head of the Armed Forces.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have spoken publicly on several occasions about their attempts to give their three children as normal an upbringing as possible.
Official photographs are released each birthday and for special occasions, in order to give the children privacy.
However, a video released by Kensington Palace to mark the 10th wedding anniversary of Prince William and Kate Middleton showed a glimpse into their family life.
The 40-second video showed the couple laughing with George, Charlotte and Louis whilst playing on a beach and roasting marshmallows.
