Prince Harry took part in an episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, led by Dax Shepard and Monica Padman. The Duke of Sussex spoke about his approach to mental health, his work to support other people struggling and the work he has done on himself to improve his wellbeing.

After discussing how people can struggle with mental health issues no matter how privileged they are, Ms Padman put the spotlight on Prince Harry’s younger years.

Recalling his trips to Commonwealth state members, she said Harry was meeting people in a “much worse situation than you, but you were in a horrible situation too, and had to put on a smile and walk around and be the person comforting.”

The Duke of Sussex replied saying: “It’s the job, grin and bear it, get on with it.

“In my early 20s, it was the case of ‘I don’t want this job, I don’t want to be here, I don’t want to be doing this, look what it did to my mum.

“‘How am I ever going to settle down and have a family when I know it’s going to happen again.

“‘Because I know, I’ve seen behind the curtain, I’ve seen how this operation runs, I don’t want to be a part of it’.”

Therapy, Harry noted, helped him “pluck his head out of the sand.”
