Prince Harry was angry at Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge following Meghan Markle’s first visit to Sandringham in 2017, as he felt they had not “rolled out the red carpets” and made his then-fiancee feel welcome. According to royal expert Katie Nicholl, the Cambridges had not made Meghan feel “special enough” during her stay with the couple.

Ms Nicholl, the royal editor of Vanity Fair, said: “It was the Prince of Wales who suggested to William that it might be a nice gesture to invite Harry and Meghan to Anmer for Christmas, which they duly did.

“By all accounts, the Cambridges pulled out all the stops.

“They made Meghan her favourite food, they gave them a wonderful room, they gave them a very warm welcome.

“But I was told, from sources close to the Sussexes, that Harry particularly felt that the Cambridges hadn’t rolled out the red carpets officially for Meghan.”

Ms Nicholl added: “They hadn’t made her feel welcome or special enough.”

It is royal tradition for the Royal Family to spend Christmas at the Sandringham Estate, the Queen’s country residence in Norfolk.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge use Anmer Hall, a Georgian house on the grounds of the estate, as their country home when they are not in London.

Following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement in November 2017, the Queen invited Meghan to spend Christmas with the family in the Norfolk countryside.

In their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in March, Harry and Meghan said that members of the Royal Family, including William and Kate, had been very welcoming and accepting of Meghan when she first joined The Firm.

They stated that the change in relations occurred after their South Pacific tour in October 2018.

Rumours of a rift between the two brothers began to circulate after the couples split their royal households, and Harry and Meghan moved out of Kensington Palace and into Frogmore Cottage.

They broke away from the Royal Foundation and set up their own charitable endeavour, Sussex Royal.

Since they announced their intention to step away from the Royal Family in January 2020, the relationship between the two couples has considerably worsened.

Prince Harry characterised his relationship with William as “space” and told Oprah that they were “on different paths”.

Both he and Meghan Markle have criticised the royal establishment and members of the Royal Family during televised interviews.

Although the two brothers have displayed a united front during the funeral of their grandfather and their reunion last week, relations between the Royal Family and the Sussexes are still strained.
