Prince Harry, 35, and Meghan Markle, 39, moved to LA early in 2020 after stepping down as senior royals but during their time in the Royal Family, they chose to live in Frogmore Cottage in Windsor more than 21 miles away from Kensington Palace. Royal biographer Ingrid Seward has claimed the Duke of Sussex thought of the Palace as a “prison” and he was “desperate” to get out. The couple announced they wanted to be financially independent of the royals in an Instagram post in January.

Speaking to True Royalty TV, Ms Seward said: “Harry felt this was a prison.

“He was saying that Kate can’t even walk her dog in Kensington Gardens like Diana used to go jogging.

“She can only walk it around the sort of private field.

“He said it is definitely a prison and he was desperate to get out.”

Royal expert Richard Kay added: “I think it was partly that and partly the whole hierarchical structure of the Royal Family which I think we now know Meghan found extremely difficult to come to terms with.

“William was not just the eldest son, he was number one and she and Harry were sufficiently lower down the rank and the pecking order.

“I think living next door to them and being constantly reminded of that may well have played on their minds too.

“I think it was quite reasonable for them to strike out somewhere else. I’m not sure that Windsor was a good choice, I think there were plenty of other apartments.”

It comes as Meghan and Harry have volunteered at a back-to-school charity event in LA.

The pair, both wearing face coverings, distributed supplies, clothes and nappies at a drive-through run by Los Angeles charity Baby2Baby, which provides basic necessities for families in need.

Pictures showed the couple handing supplies in through the windows of vehicles at Dr Owen Lloyd Knox Elementary School in South LA on Wednesday.

They were dressed casually for the outing, with Meghan sporting loose khaki shorts with a white shirt and trainers, and Harry going for a similar look plus a baseball cap.

The volunteering comes after it emerged the couple had bought a property in the celebrity hotspot of Santa Barbara for a reported £11million.

The couple had been house-hunting for some time after relocating to the US from Canada just before the coronavirus lockdown.

Harry and Meghan plunged the Royal Family into a period of crisis when they announced earlier in the year that they wanted to step back from their positions as senior royals and become financially independent.

A summit of senior royals was convened by the Queen at Sandringham to discuss the issue, with Harry sitting down for talks with his grandmother, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge.

It was later announced they would no longer be working members of the monarchy, would split their time between Canada and the UK, with the majority in North America, and no longer be known as HRH.
