The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have signed a multi-year production deal with Netflix that will have the two royals producing exclusive films and series for the streaming service. This includes scripted series, docu-series, documentaries, features and children’s programming. Prince Harry and Meghan may appear on camera for some of the projects, but the former Suits actress reportedly has no plans to return to acting.

In January, Harry and Meghan announced that they were “stepping back” from their roles as senior members of the Royal Family, and would split time between the UK and North America.

Since then, the two have purchased a home in California, and dabbled in the entertainment industry. The Netflix deal appears to be the next step in that evolution.

The couple’s deal follows a similar one Netflix inked with former US President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground Productions in 2018.

This does not come as a surprise, though, as Prince Harry appears to be extremely close to the Obamas.

In 2015, the Duke of Sussex even hosted the former First Lady and her two daughters, Sasha and Malia, for a cup of tea in his former Kensington Palace home.

The Prince was said to be “very pleased” to spend time with them.

Mrs Obama and Prince Harry discussed their mutual desire to help military families as well as the former First Lady’s’ “Let Girls Learn” initiative to promote education for adolescent girls across the world.

During his visit to the US in 2013, the Prince and Mrs Obama bonded over their work to honour veterans and their families.

At the time, Prince Harry visited the White House for a “Joining Forces” event honouring military mothers.

The former First Lady said at the time: “We are absolutely thrilled that he could be with us today.

“He wanted to be here to personally thank you for your service.”

The First Lady’s tea with Prince Harry, the first of her stops on her week-long European tour, was closed to the public.

That day, she also visited students at the Mulberry School for Girls in London where she spoke alongside Julia Gillard, the former Prime Minister of Australia, about the need to expand access to education.

Mrs Obama said at the roundtable: “There are 60 million girls all around the world, just like the girls here [at Mulberry] but they’re not getting an education.”
