Prince Philip, 99, will spend his ninth day in hospital on Wednesday after he was admitted to London’s private King Edward VII’s Hospital for treatment last week. Yesterday the Palace confirmed the Queen’s husband was “receiving medical attention for an infection” and was “not expected to leave hospital for several days.”

How is Prince Philip?

Yesterday the Palace issued the first new update on the Duke’s health since he was first admitted to hospital on the evening of February 16.

While the royal household had previously avoided sharing what was wrong with Philip they have since confirmed he is being treated for an infection.

A Buckingham Palace update on the Duke’s health read: “The Duke of Edinburgh remains at King Edward VII’s Hospital where he is receiving medical attention for an infection.”

The statement added: “He is comfortable and responding to treatment but is not expected to leave hospital for several days.”

The Palace has been keen to play down fears for the Duke’s wellbeing, emphasising that his hospital admission was on the advice of a royal doctor and “a precautionary measure.”

Philip is said to “remain in good spirits” despite his stint in hospital and on Tuesday his youngest son Prince Edward, 56, shared how his father was getting on.

Speaking to Sky News, the Earl of Wessex revealed: “As far as I’m aware, well I did speak to him the other day, so he’s a lot better thank you very much indeed, and he’s looking forward to getting out, which is the most positive thing.”

He added: “So we keep our fingers crossed.”

Quizzed about whether the no-nonsense Duke was “frustrated” about being in hospital, Edward answered: “Just a bit!

“I think that gets to all of us, and then, you can only watch the clock so many times and the walls are only so interesting.”

Edward also spoke out to thank royal fans for all the king messages the family had received since his father’s hospital admission.

Edward added: “We’ve had some brilliant and lovely messages from all sorts of people and we really appreciate that and so does he, I’ve been passing them on. It’s fantastic, thank you.”

On Monday, Prince William also shared an update on his grandfather’s health saying he was “OK” and that staff were “keeping an eye on him.”

Prince Charles, 72, is so far the only Royal Family member to have visited Philip in hospital.

The future king made the 100-mile trip from Gloucestershire to London on Saturday where he is understood to have spent around 40-minutes with his father.

Clarence House confirmed Prince Charles later returned to Highgrove in Gloucestershire after the hospital visit.

Once he is discharged, the Duke of Edinburgh is expected to return to Windsor Castle to be with the Queen.

Prince Philip retired from royal duty in 2017 at the age of 96.

While the Duke has not made many public appearances since stepping away from the royal limelight, he made an exception last July when he stepped out for a special ceremony to handover his royal as Colonel-in-Chief of The Rifles regiment to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, 73.
