The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were stunned over the claims Meghan and Harry made in their sit-down with Ms Winfrey, according to a source close to the royals. The Duchess shared her suicidal thoughts as a royal and the couple spoke of their mental health struggles in the CBS interview which aired last weekend.
A source close to William and Kate said the couple were in “total shock” over the interview.
One of the most shocking parts of the interview for the Cambridge royals was “Meghan’s suicidal thoughts”.
Meghan told Ms Winfrey she did not “want to be alive anymore” while pregnant with Archie Harrison.
The insider then added: “William and Kate knew about some of their troubles with palace aides, but nothing to this extent.”
While they “feel horrible” for the Sussexes, William and Kate “still wish” Harry and Meghan “had not tried to take down the Royal Family”, the source claimed.
The source told Us Weekly: “William and Kate feel that these conversations could have been made in private.”
In response to the bombshell interview, Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying the “whole family is saddened” by the claims.
They said: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.
“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.
“Whilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.
“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
During the interview with Ms Winfrey, Harry said he felt William and other Royal Family members were “trapped” in The Firm.
He said: “My father and my brother, they are trapped. They don’t get to leave. And I have huge compassion for that.
Another source told Us Weekly William “doesn’t feel trapped”, and added: “That is a label that Harry has unfairly given him.”
Harry also said in the interview: “I love William to bits. We’ve been through hell together and we have a shared experience but we are on different paths.”
