Robert Lacey, a veteran royal observer, shared his views on the weight William, 39, carries as future monarch.

Mr Lacey wrote in People: “Following the April death of [Prince Philip], William has stepped up to become one of the three family figures, adding the ginger of youth to royal strategy.

“It’s a crucial inflection point – this heir-in-waiting is under pressure like none before in recent history.”

Mr Lacey, a consultant on the popular Netflix drama ‘The Crown’, wrote ‘Battle of Brothers: William and Harry – The Inside Story of a Family in Tumult’ and has recently released new chapters.

He addressed the disputes within the royal family over the years.

Mr Lacey has understandably described the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as being at the forefront of the Royal Family.

He has also suggested William is “paving the way forward”.

These revealing comments comes after a number of significant recent events in the timeline of the royal family.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle confirmed their decision to step back as senior working royals earlier this year.

It has provoked a variety of commentary – and Harry has cited concerns about the impact of the spotlight on his mental health as a key reason for moving to the US.

His decision to move away represents somewhat of a shift in what it means to be a modern royal.

Reports have even suggested Charles may choose to strip back the monarchy when he succeeds Queen Elizabeth II.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are continuing their work raising awareness of important causes in the US.

The couple this week made a trip to the Big Apple for the first time together, describing their trip as “wonderful”.

As part of this trip, the couple visited One World Trade Centre – the highest skyscraper in New York City.

When asked about being back in the city, Meghan Markle said: “It’s wonderful to be back, thank you.”

And reports have even suggested Charles may choose to strip back the monarchy when he succeeds Queen Elizabeth II.

Academic Iain MacMarthanne told “As far as styles and titles are concerned the Queen is at liberty to strip whomever of whatever royal title and peerage.

“When Prince Charles inherits the throne he also inherits that same right.

“Accordingly, by a stroke, be it at the hand of Elizabeth II, or a future King Charles, HRH Prince Henry, Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton, and Baron Kilkeel, could quickly find himself becoming plain and ordinary Mr Henry Charles Albert David Mountbatten-Windsor.”

William and Kate are currently visiting Northern Ireland for the first time together since before the coronavirus pandemic.

Their visit includes going to a School of Medicine at the Ulster University, which aims to develop and train new doctors to work in Northern Ireland or elsewhere.
