TalkRADIO’s royal correspondent Rupert Bell analysed Prince William’s comments regarding the racist allegations against the Royal Family and sensed “frustration” from the future king. Mr Bell said things have been “one-sided” in the conversation as the Royal Family have provided little comment in the aftermath of Meghan Markle’s interview. He added there was also “symbolism” in Prince William’s engagement as it coincided with mental health awareness.

Speaking on Times Radio, host Jon Pienaar reflected on Prince William’s blunt answer to a journalist regarding racism.

The heir was asked whether the Royal Family was “racist” to which he replied: “We’re very much not a racist family.”

Mr Pienaar asked Mr Bell if it was a straight answer to a “very direct question”.

He replied: “I think it was a straight answer to a direct question but I think it does reflect the frustrations that the Queen very much wants to try and keep this private.

“But I think you can sense even from those little clips that William basically doesn’t quite know and can’t understand what his brother is doing and I think there’s a sense of frustration.

“And that’s why he wanted to try and put his side even very briefly out to everybody so they can see that the family are obviously deeply concerned.”

Mr Bell continued: “It was also interesting that it was at a mental health [engagement] they were at a place in East London and very much promoting the Mental Health Society.

“So, there is very great symbolism from that as well as to where they were and actually trying to prove they are getting on with their business as usual.

Prince William: Expert tells royal to ‘pick up the phone’

“But at the heart of it, there are definitely tensions and you can hear it between the two brothers they clearly are not seeing eye to eye.

“And William in a way I think wants to get back on the front foot and try and put the picture straight as it were.

“Because it’s definitely been one of it’s one-sided at the moment because the royal families have kept a lid on their feelings and their responses.”

Mr Pienaar then pondered whether Prince William would want a “verbal tit-for-tat” with Harry and Meghan.

Mr Bell replied: “No I don’t [think so], I think that’s why the Queen didn’t really want it.

“She wanted that statement and then to deal with it in-house but clearly there was a sense of frustration.

“And I think what he needs to do is pick up that phone to Harry quickly and have that conversation because that is the way you resolve it and you stop it escalating.

“Then we don’t see a trial by media or little bits of snippets getting there and a little bit getting there from both camps.

“And then it just escalates completely out of control.

“So, in a way, I think the best thing for him to do is to talk to his brother and say let’s try and get back on track.

“But the way William responded… it was off the cuff and I think reflects his disappointment and anger with what Harry’s done with that interview with Meghan and with Oprah Winfrey.”
