Prince William and Prince Harry have been dogged by persistent rumours of a rift for years, speculation further exacerbated by the Duke of Sussex defining his relationship with his older brother as “space.” The royal brothers have seen each other sparingly over the past two years since the Duke moved his family to California after he and Meghan Markle stepped down from their senior working roles within the Royal Family. Royal correspondent Peter Hunt suggested it is unlikely the Duke of Cambridge will find a “resolution” to his row with Harry.

Speaking to LBC, Mr Hunt said: “The rift is deep.

It started in part because Harry was beginning to feel restless anyway, and has really struggled with his position within the institution.

It was accelerated and ignited by his marriage to Meghan and how she fitted in the family, and what she wanted out of the family, and the role she wanted didn’t necessarily align with where the family saw her.

“I remember asking someone just before the engagement was announced, and I was talking to this person who’d seen her coming in and I said, ‘does she know what she’s marrying into?’ And they said yes, and I said, ‘but does she know-know?’ and they paused and sort of shook their head.”

Mr Hunt claimed a break between Prince Harry and the Royal Family was “inevitable” due to the different vision he and Meghan had about their role within the institution.

He also suggested the Duke of Sussex’s upcoming memoir could further sour his relationship with his brother.

The royal correspondent added: “It was just an inevitable collision when you look at it now.

“So her coming in and wanting a role the institution wasn’t prepared to give her I think further created the problem in that relationship.

“Can it be resolved? I really struggle to see a resolution, not least because in 2022 Harry will bring out his book.”

The Duke of Sussex’s autobiography is set to be released the same year the Queen will be marking her Platinum Jubilee.

According to a royal insider, news of the upcoming memoir sparked a “tsunami of fear” among Royal Family members still recovering from Harry and Meghan’s Oprah Winfrey interview in March.

They told The Mirror: “Ever since leaving royal life, Harry and Meghan have made claim after claim of how they allege they have been treated.

“They say that it is their truth but there is only ever one truth.

“Since their interview with Oprah Winfrey tensions have been running very high as much of what they said has since been proven to be unreliable at best.

“There is a now tsunami of fear among the royals over what Harry will write.

“Many hope he may correct a few things but do not hold much hope.”
