Princess Anne’s “very brusque” personality put Diana, Princess of Wales, off from her, according to royal experts. The Princess Royal was never close to her sister-in-law while Diana was still a member of the Royal Family, possibly because of their very different styles and approaches to work. Channel 5 documentary, ‘When the Spencers Met the Monarchy’, explored the tense relationship.

Majesty Magazine Editor-in-Chief Ingrid Seward told viewers: “Diana basically just distanced herself from Anne.

“She found Anne very brusque.

“And Anne couldn’t be bothered to deal with Diana’s histrionics.

“She thought, ‘Well if Diana’s getting all upset about this, it’s too bad’.”

According to Daily Mail Editor-at-Large Richard Kay, Anne didn’t like the way Diana went about her engagements.

The Princess Royal reportedly disliked the “touching and holding hands”.

He told Channel 5: “That was very anathema to Princess Anne.

“She is very formal and slightly haughty in the way that she went about her official business.”

Mr Kay added that “tricky” would be the “best word to sum up the relationship”.

In one clip of archive footage, Anne can be seen being asked if there was “any word about Diana”.

She shoots back: “Word about Diana? I don’t know, you tell me.”

According to the documentary, the only royal that really supported Diana, and didn’t “toe the family line”, was Princess Margaret.

Commentator Victoria Arbiter explained: “Diana and Margaret were great pals.

“First of all, they both lived at Kensington Palace so they were neighbours.

“But I think Margaret, perhaps more than any other member of the family, really understood what Diana was going through.

“She had been the tragic figure in years gone by that perhaps Diana was becoming.”
