Princess Beatrice and husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi waited “for enough time to have passed since Prince Philip’s funeral” before making their baby announcement. According to the Royally Obsessed podcast, this delay was a mark of respect for the Princess’ grandfather, who passed away aged 99 in early April.

Royally Obsessed host Rachel Bowie said the couple “wanted to wait” before sharing their happy news.

Ms Bowie said: “I read they wanted to wait until after enough time had passed since Prince Philip’s funeral.

“There’s that, there’s that it’s never a good day to announce things cause there’s always something happening.

Co-host Roberta Fiorito added: “And they probably need to control it so that if she’s going to be out and they see a baby bump or something…we did get recent pictures where it was visible.”

Princess Beatrice and her husband announced they were expecting their first child on May 19, 2021.

Buckingham Palace released a statement to say, “Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are very pleased to announce that they are expecting a baby in autumn of this year.”

“The Queen has been informed and both families are delighted with the news.”

The baby will be the Queen’s 12th great-grandchild and 11th in line to the throne.

Beatrice and property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi married last July in a secret ceremony at Royal Lodge, Windsor.

They were initially due to be married in May with a guest list of 150 people but were forced to delay the service due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

In July, they held a small ceremony in front of close friends and family. Both the Queen and Prince Philip were in attendance and took photographs with the newlyweds.

Other royals at the service included Princess Eugenie and the bride’s parents, Prince Andrew and his ex-wife the Duchess of York.

Princess Beatrice wore a vintage Norman Hartnell dress and the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara, which the Queen herself wore for her wedding to Prince Philip. Both items were lent to Beatrice by her grandmother and the Royal Collection.

The couple has been in a relationship since October 2018, although they have known each other for several years through family connections.

Known as Edo amongst friends, he proposed to the Queen’s granddaughter whilst on holiday in Italy in September 2019.

Her diamond and platinum engagement ring was personally crafted by her husband, along with British jewellery designer Shaun Leane.

Edoardo recently accompanied his wife to the funeral of Prince Philip at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

The Duke of Edinburgh passed away on April 9, 2021 with the Queen at his bedside. He was the longest-serving consort of a monarch in British history and has represented the Royal Family for over 70 years.

In line with his wishes, his funeral paid homage to his military appointments and highlighted his connections to the Navy and the sea.

After a two-week mourning period, the Queen returned to official duties with a retirement ceremony for her former Lord Chamberlain, Earl Peel.
