Princess Charlotte will turn five on May 2 just days after her little brother Prince Louis celebrated his second birthday on April 23. Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, 38, and Prince William, 37, have their hands full at home with all three of their young children at home amid lockdown. This is the one royal tradition the Duchess may choose to break as the family marks Charlotte’s milestone.
While social-distancing measures mean a birthday party is not on the cards for Princess Charlotte this year, Kate will be sure to make her daughter’s big day as special as possible.
Last week the Duchess, who is a keen photographer, released a series of adorable new portraits of little Prince Louis to mark his second birthday.
The same will be expected on Princess Charlotte’s birthday this Saturday and royal fans can’t wait to get a glimpse of the gorgeous photographs Kate may have in store.
One birthday tradition which is sure to be observed in the Cambridge household is that of having birthday cakes.
- Will Princess Beatrice lose THIS title to Prince Louis?
Kate has previously revealed she loves staying up late to make her children’s cakes by hand.
Speaking to TV cook Mary Berry on a BBC programme at Christmas the Duchess of Cambridge said: “I love making the cake
“It’s become a bit of a tradition that I sort of stay up until midnight with ridiculous amounts of cake mix and icing, I make far too much, but I love it.”
One thing Kate didn’t reveal is whether she sticks to the traditional royal birthday cake recipe or follows a different one altogether.
Former Palace chef Darren McGrady was a private cook to the royals for 15 years.
He has previously shared the traditional recipe for cake Royal Family members usually receive on their birthday.
Speaking to Delish Mr McGrady revealed the birthday cake recipe dates back to Queen Victoria.
He said: “The chocolate birthday cake is a recipe that dates back to Queen Victoria – it’s a family recipe.”

According to Mr McGrady, who was also Princess Diana, Prince William and Prince Harry’s private chef, it’s not just the Queen who requests this special cake on her birthday but every other member of the Royal Family too.
However, modern mum Kate has broken the mould when it comes to raising her children and prefers to do the cooking herself rather than having a private chef.
This means both Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte are likely to have non-traditional birthday cakes and may have made special requests of their mum.
Prince William has previously revealed his children’s love for Peppa Pig and it maybe Charlotte has asked for a cake that depicts her favourite cartoon character.
Last week Princess Charlotte delighted royal fans as she appeared to lead the way when her family appeared on the doorstep of Anmer Hall to clap for the NHS.
A body language reader claimed Charlotte’s “assertive” mannerisms showed she is following in her mum Kate’s footsteps.
Energy reader Alison Ward said: “Princess Charlotte looks behind her to check her at one point to check her family are all doing a good job of clapping and following her lead.”
According to Alison, Charlotte’s calm and collected behaviour shows she is being raised to be a strong female leader.
Alison said: “Charlotte is being brought up to be a strong, assertive woman for sure.”
