Princess Diana once caused controversy at a public event according to two royal experts. Channel 5’s royal documentary ‘Fergie vs Diana: Royal Wives at War’ explored the complex relationship between Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson as well as mishaps during their time as working members of the Royal Family. The Sun newspaper reported on the incident, referring to Fergie and Diana caustically as “silly, simpering girls.”

The narrator Glynis Barber said: “Diana did her best to be more fun like Fergie.

“One attempt at Ascot in 1987 was to backfire.”

Royal commentator Ingrid Seward and Richard Kay highlighted an incident that caused outrage and concern regarding Fergie and Diana’s behaviour.

Mr Kay claimed the repercussions were huge as he hinted at a backlash following the event.

Ms Seward said: “There was one occasion at Royal Ascot where they spotted a friend of Fergie’s in the crowd.

“They were all carrying umbrellas and they poked her bottom with this umbrella.”

Mr Kay added: “It is all very funny but the repercussions were huge.

“But both Sarah Ferguson and Princess Diana were upbraided for sort of misbehaving in public.”

Princess Diana was reportedly attempting to be more fun like Fergie following a row she had with Prince Charles.

Royal commentators noted how a strained friendship here also caused problems during her marriage to Prince Charles.

Behavioural Psychologist and royal commentator Jo Hemming highlighted a row between Diana and Charles that resulted in one of the most hurtful exchanges between the pair.

She said: “There was a point at which that Prince Charles said to Princess Diana, why can’t you be more like Fergie.

“Now for someone who has self-esteem that is already low, who is feeling very vulnerable, that wasn’t just a rebuke.

“That would have been one of the most cutting hurtful remarks that her husband could have made to her.”

Royal commentator Tom Quinn also reflected on the difficulties Diana felt in the Royal Family in comparison to her friend Fergie.

He said: “Princess Diana was aware that Sarah was a very skilled manipulator of people to some extent.

“This is because she famously said that Sarah had wooed the Royal Family.

“She added that Fergie knew exactly what she was doing when she said certain things to certain members of the Royal Family.”
