The Queen visited the Commonwealth War Graves memorial in Runnymeade on Wednesday morning to mark the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Airforce. Her Majesty was beaming as she chatted with some of the pilots while discussing their work while stationed in the UK. Talking with one member of the force, she asked about “being sent off to chase the Russians?”

The pilot answered: “That’s correct ma’am, it’s a lot of fun for us!”

Commenting on the exchange, ITV Royal Editor Chris Ship wrote on Twitter: “Queen acknowledges the moment with a simple ‘Hmm’.”

The Queen had previously spoken to Airforce personnel recently posted to the UK, wishing them better luck in visiting the country once the pandemic crisis has passed.

She said: “Yes, it’s rather bad luck to have arrived in lockdown isn’t it… I hope in the next couple of years you’ll be able to travel a bit more”.
