Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have caused controversy and faced backlash after releasing a video on the US presidential election. The outrage stems from the fact members of the Royal Family are meant to remain netural on all political aspects. While speaking on BBC News, Royal expert Daniela Relph argued the pair had broken a promise to the Queen as they had said they would continue to uphold the values of the Queen after stepping down as working members of the Royal Family.

BBC host Sophie Raworth said: “Prince Harry has been criticised for appearing to make an intervention in the US election.

“In a broadcast for TIME magazine alongside his wife Meghan Markle, he urged American citizens to use their vote in this November’s presidential election to reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity.

“This was their first joint TV appearances since they ceased being working members of the Royal Family in March.”

Ms Relph highlighted the key reason the Sussexes comments on politics were breaching the agreement made with the Queen.

She said: “When they withdrew from royal life this year, they did so while promising that whatever they did next they would uphold the values of the Queen.

“How do you judge that? She is of course politically neutral.

“These comments from Harry and Meghan are being interpreted as a direct attack on President Trump and a call to vote for Joe Biden.

“They had not been run past any officials at Buckingham Palace beforehand.

“A spokesperson there has said that Prince Harry is no longer a working member of the Royal Family.

“Therefore anything that he now says is his personal comment.”

Ms Relph reflected on the difficulties for Meghan and Harry after leaving the Royal Family as working members.

She said: “This is an example of the balancing act that Meghan and Harry are now having to negotiate.

“They are in the US wanting to forge this new life for themselves while earning their own money.

“They clearly are wanting the freedom to speak out on social and political issues.”

Many royal fans have taken to social media to call on both Harry and Meghan to relinquish their royal titles if they begin to comment on politics.
