In the course of their 90-minute sit-down with Ms Winfrey, Meghan and Harry made a series of astonishing allegations against the Royal Family. The Duchess of Sussex alleged that she was silenced by the “Firm” and denied help when suffering a mental health crisis. Prince Harry also said that he felt “let down” by his father, who refused to take his calls for a short time after Megxit.

The Queen issued her response to the CBS interview in a short statement two days later.

While acknowledging that Harry, Meghan and Archie remained “much loved family members”, the statement archly noted that “some recollections may vary” as to the issue and concerns raised in the interview.

A Royal insider told People magazine that the inclusion of this line amounted to an “underlying jab” – an expression of disapproval from Royal Family members about allegations made.

Another Palace source told the publication that there was “anger” at the claims among both the Royals and their staff.

They said: “There were genuinely mixed emotions and deep sorrow and shock there too.”

The full statement read: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.

“Whilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
