Royal protocol demands that all those invited to dine with her Majesty must follow a strict set of rules, with no exceptions. In accordance with those rules, fellow diners must never take their seat before the Queen has taken hers and must ensure that they mimic her behaviour throughout. However, there have been occasions when her dinner guests have accidentally broken royal protocol, with one instance involving Prince Philip.

During a dinner hosted by the British monarch for a local prince on her Royal Yacht Britannia, when she was on a tour of the South Pacific, her husband inadvertently made a faux pas.

Paul Burrell, a former Royal butler, told The Guardian how a momentary lapse of concentration as dessert was served almost landed the Duke of Edinburgh in hot water.

The Prince forgot the cardinal rule of watching the monarch at all times and to follow her example.

Mr Burrell explained: “Instead, he popped the grapes into his finger bowl, then some cherries, then when the cream and sugar came out, he poured them in too, making a kind of fruit soup.

“I was standing behind the Queen looking horrified.

“He was about to raise the bowl to his lips to drink it when he looked at the Queen and realised he had made a terrible mistake.”

Her Majesty was able to retrieve the awkward situation with some quick thinking.

She calmly picked up her own bowl and took a sip, thereby sparing her husband’s blushes.

The British monarch has a very refined palate and enjoys both French and British cuisine.

She also prefers to eat food that comes directly from her estates, such as salmon from the River Dee at Balmoral.

Former Royal chef Darren McGrady spilled the beans to Hello! about some of her Majesty’s favourite dishes.

He said: “We used a repertoire of dishes, mainly British and French food.

“We cooked a lot of traditional French food like halibut on a bed of spinach with a Mornay sauce.”
