Prince Philip was the “one person of support [the Queen] could always turn to”, a royal expert has claimed. BBC Royal Correspondent Nicholas Witchell spoke about the devastating blow that the Duke of Edinburgh’s death will have on the monarch. He also noted how other members of the family may be dealing with the “period of great sadness”.

Mr Witchell told viewers: “In that very solitary position as head of state, the Queen would have relied more than usual on her husband.

“He was the one person of support she could always turn to.

“There will be a period of great sadness and the rest of the Royal Family will, of course, rally around and be there.”
