Biographer Tom Bower claimed the monarch’s “prime focus” will be “saying farewell” to her beloved husband on Saturday. But after that she will try to “broker peace” with Harry, who laid bare rifts with Prince Charles and Prince William during his and Meghan Markle’s Oprah Winfrey interview last month.

Writing in The Sun, Mr Bower said: “Much will depend on whether Charles and William are willing to seek reconciliation.

“That will depend on Harry himself. If he arrives as a self-righteous, unapologetic warrior, he risks sealing a permanent divorce from his family

“If, in the sight of Philip’s coffin and his grieving grandmother, he is contrite, he might begin to rebuild a relationship with Charles and William.”

Mr Bower added: “Much will depend on the Queen.

“Undoubtedly mortified by Harry’s disloyalty, her prime focus will be saying farewell to her husband.

“Thereafter, if Harry decides to stay in Britain for a few days, she will undoubtedly use the opportunity to broker peace.”

Harry is staying at his former residence, Frogmore Cottage, ahead of the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.

The Sun reported that Queen’s grandson, wearing a black face mask, landed at Heathrow on a British Airways flight from Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon.

The pregnant Duchess of Sussex is not joining her husband after being advised against flying.

Harry will not walk shoulder to shoulder with his older brother when they take part in Philip’s funeral procession with other royals.

The once-close brothers will be separated by their cousin Peter Phillips when the trio walk in a line behind their grandfather’s coffin.

Future king William will be one step ahead of Harry when the coffin is taken into St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, moving ahead of his younger brother as the Royal Family including the Prince of Wales process in pairs.

Asked whether arrangements reflected the royal siblings’ relationship, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “This is a funeral, we’re not going to be drawn into those perceptions of drama, or anything like that, this is a funeral.

“The arrangements have been agreed, and they represent Her Majesty’s wishes, so we’re not going to say anything more on that.”

Speculation had been high that the funeral of their grandfather could bring William and Harry closer together following their ongoing rift.

Tensions are said to date back to the early days of Harry’s romance with Meghan when he was angered by what he perceived to be William’s “snobbish” attitude when he questioned whether his younger brother should rush into things.

And the strained relationship between William and Harry – whose bond once appeared unbreakable – was clear at the Sussexes’ final royal engagement in March 2020.

It is the first time Harry has returned to Britain in the wake of Megxit.

Harry and William released separate statements on Monday paying tribute to Philip.
