Viewers of the Queen’s state funeral were left distracted by the sight of an exceptionally tall man in the procession from Westminster Abbey through central London. The Queen was finally laid to rest following 70 years of service after family, friends and the nation said a fond farewell to the late monarch.

The ceremony full of emotion under the gaze of the world, saw many world leaders and dignitaries turn out in London.

But it was the stature of a royal aide who caught the attention of royal watchers.

And that is because the Queen’s Assistant Private Secretary Matthew Magee stands at an impressive 7ft 2in.

Despite his brief appearance in the procession, Mr Magee, from Northern Ireland, turned royal watchers’ heads, with the hashtag #tallman even trending on Twitter. 

Wealands Bell posted: “Does anyone know who the extraordinarily tall man is, walking ahead of the hearse? He has certainly captured our imagination here. (But then we are all rather short.)”

Teresa tweeted: “Does anyone know who the exceptionally tall man is walking in front of the Queen’s cortège? #queensfuneral #QueensFuneral”

@shauntel01 added: “And.. the star of the day! Who is the soon-to-be-famous tall man? #Queen #QueenElizabethII #tallman #queensfuneral”

His appearance prompted people to scramble to find out who he was.

Ed joked on Twitter: “Matthew Magee. Private Secretary to the Queen. He’s 7ft 2in tall.

“She always looked up to him.”

Sullivan Connect wrote: “Much ado on Twitter about the very tall gentleman that was part of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral procession today. That is Matthew Magee, former Sullivan pupil (Class of 2003) and Private Secretary to Her Majesty.”

@Madelinerhaley said: “Spent a while searching for who the tall man was to find he is the Queen’s aide Matthew Magee 7foot 2! #tallman #queensfuneral”

Simon Gary added: “Right now, Matthew Magee must be one of the most famous people in the world.”

Mr Magee replaced Samantha Cohen a the monarch’s assistant private secretary in 2018.

At 7ft 2in, he is one of the tallest people in the Crown employ.

Impressively, he is even taller than ‘Tall Paul’, who featured alongside Her Majesty and James Bond’s Daniel Craig for the Longon  Daniel Craig in the classic James Bond sketch for the London Olympics.
