Princess Sofia of Sweden has given birth to her and Prince Carl Philip’s third child. The baby news was announced in a Swedish palace statement, confirming that the latest addition was a boy. Carl Philip’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, has now come out to share the name and title of his grandson.
The baby is named Julian Herbert Folke.
His full title is Prince Julian Herbert Folke of Sweden, Duke of Halland.
The middle name Folke is one of the King’s middle names.
It is inspired by Folke Bernadotte, a Swedish nobleman who negotiated the release of about 31,000 prisoners from German concentration camps in 1945.
As for the baby’s title, the dukedom also has a connection to a much loved family member.
Halland is a former duchy of Prince Bertil, who was Carl XVI Gustaf’s uncle and reportedly adored by Carl Philip.
Carl Philip and Sofia live, with their children, in Bertil’s former home, Villa Solbacken.
The couple already has two other sons: Prince Alexander, aged four, and Prince Gabriel, aged three.

A salute 21 shots was fired outside the Royal Palace in Stockholm in honour of the new Prince.
Julian will not receive the Royal Highness style due to a 2019 decree by the king.
Carl XVI Gustaf revoked the HRH from many of his grandchildren in order to limit who in the Swedish Royal Family would belong to the royal house.
They are still part of the family and in the line of succession.
However this means that the ‘Royal Highness’ title was taken away from both Alexander and Gabriel.
