Royal experts have dismantled furious accusations that Prince William is working against the Scottish independence movement. After his trip to Scotland, an SNP source reportedly told Channel 4 the Duke of Cambridge’s “secret meeting with Gordon Brown would appear to be evidence of coordination between the unionist campaign and the Royal Family”. However, the claims were soundly put to rest by ITV Royal Rota podcast hosts Chris Ship and Lizzie Robinson.

Mr Ship told listeners: “I’ve been trying to correct the record about what happened on the last day when he met Gordon Brown, the former UK prime minister who’s also passionately supporting Scotland staying in the United Kingdom.

“There’s a lot of controversy about whether or not he should have met him.

“But the Court Circular clearly shows that he also met Nicola Sturgeon, who wants Scotland to leave the United Kingdom and be an independent country.

“So he kind of met both sides and I was trying to work out where the controversy was.”

He added: “He had private audiences with with Nicola Sturgeon and Gordon Brown – where’s the issue?”

Ms Robinson explained further: “We should also point out that he met Alistair Carmichael, who is the Liberal Democrat MP for Orkney and Shetland.

“We were told by a spokesperson for Kensington Palace that during his time here he spoke to a broad range of people from different communities, including politicians from across the political spectrum.

“If you look at it on paper he did meet politicians from across the political spectrum.”

She continued: “He met Nicola Sturgeon, Gordon Brown and Alistair Carmichael.

“So it’s not one isolated person.”

Mr Ship told the podcast: “Both Nicola Sturgeon’s meeting and Gordon Brown’s meeting were on the Court Circular.”

He added: “They weren’t publicised in advance, we should point out.

“Some people are asking why not but these were sort of private audiences.”

William had been in Scotland the past week to represent the Queen as Lord High Commissioner of the Church of Scotland.

Each year, the monarch appoints someone to attend the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland on her behalf.

After three days in the northern country, the Duke was joined by his wife, Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and they carried out a series of engagements together.
