Although the fallout from the tell-all interview may have created issues within the Firm, Harry and Philip always had a strong bond, one royal commentator has claimed. Indeed, columnist Bryony Edwards claimed Harry only wanted to explain the reasoning behind his decision to step back as a senior royal during the interview with Oprah. As both served in the British Army, Harry and Philip shared a joint passion and the Duke of Sussex will be eager to continue his grandfather’s work with the military, Ms Edwards claimed.

Writing for The Daily Telegraph, Ms Gordon spoke of Harry’s interview with James Corden days before their bombshell tell-all sitdown with Oprah.

Following the interview, Ms Gordon said Harry had shown how closeness to Philip whom he allegedly spoke to a “few times” over Zoom.

She said: “That insight did not generate the excitable, scandalous headlines of the Oprah interview a few days later, but it did show how close Prince Harry has continued to be to his grandparents, despite rumours of a ‘royal rift’.

“If there was a fissure within the Royal Family, it most certainly wasn’t between Harry and his grandparents – he revealed to Oprah that the Queen and Prince Philip were not behind the racist remarks discussed during the interview.

“Prince Harry’s intention with Oprah was never to hurt his grandparents, only to explain why he chose to move and step back.

“And it is unlikely that the unflappable Duke of Edinburgh – veteran of the Second World War – was much bothered by the interview with Winfrey.

“Besides, there was an unshakeable bond between grandfather and grandson, born partly from their joint passion for the military.”

Following his death on Friday, Philip’s funeral will be held at St George’s Chapel on Saturday, April 17.
