Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William spent the Christmas period at their Norfolk estate, Anmer Hall, meaning the youngest of the Cambridge children fulfilled an important tradition. Prince Louis, three, has not had the opportunity to participate in as many royal events or family get-togethers as usual because of the restrictions imposed to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Queen cancelled her plans for a family celebration at neighbouring Sandringham after concerns of the spread of the Omicron variant.

But the Cambridges still managed to celebrate at the Kings Lynn estate with Kate’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton.

It was also a first for Prince Louis, who attended the Christmas Day service at St Mary Magdalene Church for the very first time.

It is tradition that Her Majesty, 95, and other members of the Royal Family attend the morning service on December 25 at St Mary Magdalene, on the grounds of Sandringham.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte attended their first Christmas Day service at Sandringham back in 2016 but only attended church for the first time in 2019.

Traditionally the royals stop and talk to members of the public on the walk, but crowds were unable to gather amid rising coronavirus cases, meaning die hard fans missed the chance to see Louis’ Christmas debut.

This year, the Queen opted not to attend the service in Sandringham, staying in Windsor Castle for the second consecutive Christmas.

She was also not among the Royal Family present at the 25 December service at St George’s Chapel, on the grounds of Windsor.

Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall led a small group of royals, including the Earl and Countess of Wessex, as they attended the festive service.
