The Meghan and Harry interview

Easily one of the most explosive moments in recent royal history, the Oprah Winfrey interview was one of the most talked about TV events of the year.

The effect of the interview has been long-lasting. The couple have been confirmed as the most Googled and talked about royal moment this year, according to research by Lucky Creek.

The interview was also the most talked about Royal moment of 2021, being searched for 566 percent more than any other Royal event, including Prince Philip’s funeral.

A spokesperson for Lucky Creek told “This year has been incredibly eventful for the entire Royal Family and it is fascinating to see Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey being hailed as the most talked about Royal moment of the year.

“It is truly a testament to the couple’s influence that they have captured the world’s attention despite very few public appearances.”

Death of Prince Philip

Prince Philip died in April 2021 aged 99 years old, just short of his centenary birthday.

His funeral took place at St George’s Chapel in Windsor on April 17, in a parred down ceremony in line with coronavirus rules at the time that permitted no more than 30 mourners at a ceremony.

The funeral gave us one of the most poignant images of the year, when the Queen was pictured sat alone during the service wearing all black and a face mask at the height of England’s third lockdown.

Three new royal babies

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcomed their second child in June 2021 – Lilibet Diana, who’s name is a touching tribute to the Queen and Prince Harry’s late mother Princess Diana.

The York sisters also welcomed their first children in 2021 – Princess Eugenie gave birth to a son, August, with her husband Jack Brooksbank in February of this year.

Shortly after, her elder sister Princess Beatrice announced her pregnancy, and gave birth to a daughter, Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, in September.

Meghan Markle’s court case

The Duchess of Sussex took action against the Mail on Sunday, after the paper published extracts of a letter intended for her father.

In their decision, the three judges ruled in favour of Ms Markle and said the letter’s contents were “personal, private and not matters of legitimate public interest”.

She said it was a win “not just for me, but for anyone who has ever felt scared to stand up for what’s right”.

Queen’s health scare

The monarch was forced to cancel multiple engagements due to ill health in October and November, including missing the annual Remembrance Day services in London.

Buckingham Palace said the Queen had strained her back, and that driving to London and standing for the service was unlikely to be a wise idea.

She was also forced to miss the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow – but other family members went in her stead.
