Royal heartbreak: Prince William ‘hoped Prince Harry would be there for him’

Prince Harry and William: Expert on ‘rift’ in relationship

Royal author Angela Levin warned the brothers, who have been the subject of an alleged rift, are unlikely to “get back to what they were” due to the way Harry and Meghan Markle left the Royal Family. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to have blindsided the royals when they announced shock plans to step back as senior royals just over a year ago.

Ms Levin told Express.co.uk: “I think they will have a superficial relationship that is polite but I don’t think they can ever get back to what they were because of how they’ve handled leaving the Royal Family.

“I don’t think it matters so much that they left the Royal Family – although Prince William obviously hoped he would be there for him and Harry said one of his key roles was to support his brother – but I think it was the way it was done.”

Meghan and Harry released a bombshell statement on Instagram on January 8 2020, revealing they wanted to “carve out a progressive new role within this institution” – sparking a royal crisis.

The Queen quickly convened a summit at Sandringham with Prince Charles, William and Harry to resolve the situation.

The Sussexes wanted to earn their own money and still support the Queen.

But their plan was deemed unworkable and they quit as working royals completely after a final round of engagements in March – less than two years after Meghan became a member of the Royal Family.

Meghan and Harry are now living in America with their young son Archie.

They have bought an £11million mansion in Montecito, California.

The former Suits actress and the Queen’s grandson have secured lucrative multimillion-pound deals with Netflix and Spotify.

The couple has also established their Archewell charitable foundation.

Meghan and Harry’s departure from the monarchy – dubbed Megxit – is due to be reviewed after 12 months.

It is thought this was to allow them a way back if they changed their minds.

There are also a number of outstanding issues to deal with including what will happen to Harry’s honorary military titles.

Ms Levin said she “can’t see they will want to return to the royal fold”.

She said: “They have got all these side contracts in place on the other side of the world.

“But I do think they probably want all the benefits of being a royal.

“It does help them get lots of jobs undoubtedly and I think they want to do that.

“I think Harry very much wants to have a connection with the military and also the charities that he loves supporting.

“But as has been said a hundred times you can’t have it both ways.”

Kensington Palace declined to comment.
