The Communication Workers Union said its members want a “dignified, proper pay rise” after they were given two percent . It added 97.6 percent had voted in favour of the strike which it said will be the biggest so far this summer.

General secretary Dave Ward said: “We can’t keep living in a country where bosses rake in billions…while employees are forced to use food banks.”

Royal Mail said it has “contingency plans” to minimise disruption.
