Royal pets: What type of dog is Kate Middleton and Prince William’s new puppy?

The Cambridge family were sadly bereaved at the end of last year by the loss of their beloved family dog, Lupo. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced the sad news on Instagram last year.

The couple wrote: “Very sadly last weekend our dear dog, Lupo, passed away.

“He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much.”

Lupo was a black English Cocker Spaniel, gifted to the family by Kate’s brother James in 2011.

Lupo was already in the Middleton family when he went to live with the Cambridges – being the puppy of the Middleton’s family dog, Ella, owned by James Middleton, Kate’s brother.

The dog was reportedly a wedding present to the couple, who married in the same year.

But now, the couple have received another special gift from James – and it is sweetly linked to Lupo.

Lupo’s sister, Luna, welcomed six puppies in 2020

The couple reportedly got the new puppy prior to the death of Lupo.

James also paid tribute to Lupo via Instagram after his death.

He said: “Nothing can ever prepare you for the loss of a dog.

“For those who have never had a dog, it might be hard to understand the loss.

“However for those who have loved a dog know the truth: a dog is not just a pet; it is a member of the family, a best friend, a loyal companion, a teacher and a therapist.”

He continued: “There isn’t much of a rule book on how to grieve for a dog, but I’ve said a prayer, lit a candle and taken Ella (Mum) for a long walk to spend time remembering Lupo.

“Rest in peace Lupo. Tilly & Mini will be waiting for you.

“You will always be remembered and your legacy will live on forever. Good Boy.”

James is something of a dog enthusiast, dedicating much of his Instagram profile to his six dogs, most of whom are spaniels.

Mr Middleton works with dog charities in the UK, advocating for dogs to be used in therapy.

What type of dog is the Cambridge’s new puppy?

The new puppy, whose name has not yet been revealed to the public, is an English Cocker Spaniel.

As the dog has not been pictured, the colour is not known – but it is likely they are similar in style to Lupo.

The Cambridge’s are not the only royals to suffer the loss of a pet this year.

The Queen lost her last dog, Vulcan, in December.
