Royal record: The one European monarch Queen must surpass to snatch longest-reigning crown

Born to King George VI in 1926, Queen Elizabeth II became monarch at an unexpected time. After the sudden death of her father in 1952, Queen Elizabeth ascended the throne at the young age of 25. Now 93, the Queen has recently celebrated her Sapphire Jubilee in 2017, marking 65 years on the throne. The Queen is currently ranked fifth on the list of longest-reigning monarchs. Louis XIV of France holds the current record of 72 years and 109 days.

Angela Mollard told the ROYALS Podcast: “She is not the world’s longest-reigning monarch but she has now taken out fifth place.

“So she recently usurped the 19th-century emperor of Austria Franz Joseph.

“He had the stint of being on the thrown for 67 years and 356 days.

“She has now gone past that but she is still only number five.”

She continued: “So she has got a while to go, she has done 67 years and she has got to get 72 years and 110 days to eclipse Louis XIV of France who reigned from 1643- 1715.

“Which is a jolly long innings, anything could have killed you back then.

“So anyway she has got to do another five years.

“She is 94 this year, wouldn’t you just love her to get to be 100 and to be the longest-reigning monarch of all time.”

Earlier this week Royal expert Kevin Maguire told ITV Good Morning Britain that the Queen will be feeling “battered” by the news her grandson Peter Phillips and his wife, Autumn, will divorce following 12 years of marriage.

Peter Phillips, 42, is the son of Princess Anne and her first husband, Captain Mark Phillips.

He is the eldest grandchild of the Queen and Prince Philip and is 15th in line to the throne.

Mr Maguire said: “I think it is different from the others, it is very different from Andrew, very different from Meghan and Harry.

“I think it is just personal sadness.”

“You can see with her she must be feeling battered, with the family falling apart.

“12 years is quite a long time.

“She wanted to go, we don’t know what is behind it.

“She is called Autumn but it must feel like winter for the Queen now.

“It wouldn’t be front-page news without everything else but it is.

“That is an interesting point, a relatively minor royal but suddenly on the front page off the back of everything else.”
