A popular pastry product sold at Sainsbury’s, Asda and Ocado has been recalled over fears it may be contaminated with mould.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said packs of St Pierre 6 Pains Au Chocolat may be ‘unsafe to eat’ last Friday.
Customers have been advised to make sure they do not eat the potentially dangerous treats.
Packs with one of the following best-before dates should be avoided:
- September 17, 2023
- September 25, 2023
- October 1, 2023.
The FSA said: ‘If you have bought any of the above product do not eat it.
‘Instead, return it to your nearest store for a full refund. You do not need your receipt.’
The food safety watchdog also warned people who usually freeze their Pains au Chocolat to check their best-before dates.
Food mould is a microscopic fungus which grows when old food starts to rot.
While it does not always have an effect, it can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Some moulds can trigger more serious issues, such as an allergic reaction or respiratory problems.
In rare cases, certain types of moulds in the right conditions can produce poisonous substances called mycotoxins.
