Sara Sharif: Girl found dead in house was known to social services

A 10-year-old girl who was found dead in her home in Surrey was known to the authorities, Surrey County Council has confirmed.

Sara Sharif’s body was found at her family home in Woking on August 10.

Surrey Police launched a murder investigation and have now confirmed they want to speak to her father Urfan Sharif, his partner Beinash Batool, and brother Faisal Malik, who flew to Pakistan the day before she was found.

The county council has confirmed the local authority knew of Sara, and said it would ‘work tirelessly’ to gain a ‘full understanding’ of the situation.

Tim Oliver, the council’s leader, previously said the National Child Safeguarding Panel had been notified and a multi-agency review was under way.

He added: ‘This is an incredibly sad situation and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with everyone affected.

‘We can confirm Sara Sharif was known to Surrey County Council but we cannot comment further while the Surrey Safeguarding Children Partnership’s thorough review process is ongoing.

‘This rapid review will determine whether a Local Child Safeguarding Practice Review is to be undertaken by the Surrey Safeguarding Children Partnership.

‘A Local Child Safeguarding Practice Review is a statutory process, bringing together partners including the police, health, social care and education to review practice of all agencies involved, organisational structures and learning.’

There is no formal extradition treaty between Pakistan and the UK – but it’s understood two police teams in Jhelum, in the north Punjab area, are looking for Mr Sharif.

Once they find him, they’re likely to take him into custody as they’ve been given the go-ahead by the Federal Investigation Agency, the BBC reports.

Surrey Police said Mr Sharif, 41, made a 999 call from Pakistan shortly after landing in Islamabad with his partner, his brother and five children, aged between one and 13.

The call led officers to the house in Woking where they found Sara’s body. She had sustained ‘multiple and extensive injuries’, likely to have been caused over a period of time.
