Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank announced she was pregnant with her first child yesterday. The news delighted royal fans, who have been hoping to see another royal baby on the scene ever since the two tied the knot back in 2018. This will be the Queen’s ninth great-grandchild, but Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s first grandchild.

Sarah — affectionately known as Fergie — took to social media yesterday and expressed her excitement at meeting the baby when it arrives early next year.

The Duchess of York tweeted: “I am so excited by the news that Eugenie and Jack are expecting their first child.

“Thrilled for them both and in my 60th year cannot wait to be a grandmother.

“Welcoming a new baby into the York family is going to be a moment of profound joy.”

However, in un unearthed interview, Fergie confessed she had struggled the first time she and Andrew welcomed a baby into the York family.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar in 2007, Fergie explained how she truly felt during her pregnancy with Princess Beatrice in 1988.

She said: “Two weeks after the wedding, the courtiers told Andrew, who thought he’d be stationed in London, ‘You have to go to sea’.”

The Duke and Duchess of York married in July 1986.

She continued: “I spent my entire first pregnancy alone; when Beatrice was born Andrew got 10 days of shore leave, and when he left and I cried, they all said: ‘Grow up and get a grip’.

“So don’t let them tell you what to feel, how to do things, who you are. Be yourself.”

Andrew served in the Royal Navy as a helicopter pilot and captain of a warship, and even served in the Falklands War in 1982.

However, Fergie struggled with her husband’s prolonged absences and they split up in 1992, although they did not make their divorce official for another four years.

During the interview in Harper’s Bazaar, Fergie also gave advice to other royal brides, explaining: “All I’d say is, no matter what, stay with your man; don’t let him be taken from you.

“Prince or no prince, love that man, and that love will hold him.

“I married my boy who happened to be a prince and a sailor, because I loved him — and still do — my only condition being, ‘I have to be with you’.”

Unlike her mother, Eugenie did not marry a royal.

She wed Jack in October 2018, in a lavish ceremony in St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

He is a brand ambassador for a tequila company, Casamigos, and as children take their titles from their fathers, Eugenie and Jack’s child will be born without a title.

As his work is based in the UK, Jack is probably not going to be called out of the country much during the next few months, meaning he will be able to accompany Eugenie during this exciting time.

The York family are known to be very close, with Andrew and Fergie still considering each other to be very good friends despite going through a tricky divorce.

Together with their two daughters Eugenie and Beatrice, they have a tight-knit family unit.

Beatrice also took a step towards starting her own family and got married in July in a scaled-down ceremony, after her planned wedding had to be cancelled due to lockdown restrictions.
