Seven arrested after crowds of 'hundreds' descend on pub in tier three

‘Hundreds’ of drinkers descended on a tier three pub in London last night with dramatic footage showing crowds breaking through a police human barrier.

Seven people were arrested at Hackney Wick for alleged health breaches as officers attempted to break up the mass gathering on Thursday.

A video filmed by an onlooker shows a large crowd of people pushing past police to run down the road.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said officers had tried to break up groups by ‘encouraging people to disperse’.

It comes two days after London was plunged into tier three lockdown, with all pubs, bars and restaurants all closed.

People are banned from meeting anyone outside their household or bubble indoors, in private gardens or outdoor venues under the ‘very high alert’ restrictions.

One onlooker said last night: ‘Current situation at Hackney Wick. Hundreds of people meeting up and drinking together and police forces getting ready to break the illegal gathering!’

Another added: ‘Serious scenes in Hackney Wick tonight’.

Chief Superintendent Karen Findlay said: ‘Really disappointing this is happening given many Londoners are all doing their bit to help communities stay safe.

‘Metropolitan Police will continue to try to explain and encourage compliance with the regulations but enforcement action shouldn’t have to be taken.’

A Metropolitan Police spokesman added: ‘Officers attended White Post Lane, E9 this evening after a large group of people gathered at a pub.

‘Officers engaged with those present to encourage them to disperse, in line with current Coronavirus legislation.

‘Seven people have been arrested for offences under the health protection regulations. No reports of any injuries.’
