Several roads have been locked down in Manchester city centre following reports of a suspicious item being found on a bus.
A heavy police presence remains at Manchester Piccadilly station after the bus and nearby shops were evacuated as a precaution.
Greater Manchester Police were called to the scene at around 1.15pm today and have cordoned off the area.
At the scene is local councillor Pat Karney, who told Manchester Evening News: ‘There are four ambulances, numerous police vehicles, a helicopter. All the emergency services. It’s a major incident.
‘The crowds are being pushed back, they are obviously taking every precaution.’
One Twitter user wrote: ‘I’m stood here after getting evacuated from Piccadilly, at least 150 police from a suspicious package on a bus.’
Warning of congestion on the roads, Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted: ‘Due to a Police Incident Parker Street, Piccadilly is closed.’
