The Queen’s youngest son Prince Edward married Sophie, Countess of Wessex at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, in 1999. The couple has since welcomed two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn, and the family live just a short drive from the Queen’s Windsor Castle residence at Bagshot Park in Surrey. Over recent years, Sophie is thought to have become a close confidante of the Queen, and she has been frequently entrusted to represent the monarch on official royal engagements.

Windsor Castle event, 2020

Members of the Royal Family gathered at Windsor Castle to thank volunteers and key workers for their efforts during the pandemic in December 2020. As part of the lineup of senior royals present, Sophie and Edward were seen sharing what seemed to be a happy private chat with the Queen on the steps of the castle.

Buckingham Palace reception, 2019

In a room full of people, the Queen looked absolutely delighted to be chatting with Sophie at a Buckingham Palace reception in 2019. The event celebrated the work of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, and the Queen can be seen beaming as she talked to her daughter-in-law.

Royal Ascot, 2019

Visit to Royal Albert Hall, 2015

In 2015 the Queen, Princess Anne and Sophie, Countess of Wessex visited the Royal Albert Hall for the Centenary Annual Meeting of The National Federation Of Women’s Institutes. Sophie was pictured having a little laugh while the Queen inspected a cake made especially for the event.

Celebration of Sophie and Edward’s patronages, 2015

Prince Edward and Sophie were present for a reception at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the patronages supported by the couple in their royal roles. Clearly proud of her son and daughter-in-law, the Queen was in attendance for the royal event.

Church service in Sandringham, 2008

More than a decade ago it seems the Queen and Sophie still had a good relationship, as the pair could be seen smiling and chatting outside a church in Sandringham in 2008. The royals had been attending the Christmas Day church service, which Sophie has regularly accompanied the Queen to over the years.
