From ChatGPT to Google Bard, Artificial Intelligence has been experiencing a massive rise in popularity recently. Now, Snapchat has got in on the action with its own chatbot – My AI.
Designed to be a ‘personal sidekick’ to Snapchat users, the temporary picture-sharing service wants My AI to be ‘an experimental, friendly, chatbot.’
However, it has not all been plain sailing for artificial intelligence of late.
Only yesterday, the ‘Godfather of AI’ Dr Geoffrey Hinton, 75, warned of the dangers of AI surpassing human intelligence as an ‘existential risk’ as he quit Google.
On a smaller level, several AI chatbots have also been known to ‘hallucinate’ – that is, present fake information as accurate. Even Snapchat warns that ‘it’s possible My AI’s responses may include biased, incorrect, harmful, or misleading content.’
With this in mind, is it safe to let kids use Snaptchat’s new My AI?

On its support website, Snapchat itself make it clear that the service has an age restriction of 13+.
They also have advice for staying safe on Snapchat.
If you are a parent over the age of 25, Snapchat’s Family Centre offers support and allows you to gain some insight into what your teenager might be doing on Snapchat while still respecting their privacy.
This scheme will also be extended to the My AI, with Snapchat saying: ‘We’re also working on adding additional tools to our Family Centre around My AI that would give parents more visibility and control around their teen’s usage of My AI.’
It is worth keeping in mind that you can also remove My AI from Snapchat.
