The Duchess of Cambridge re-wore a pale purple Alexander McQueen dress, which was made for her a decade ago, for the event at Alexandra Palace in north London. Kate gave the gown, which she first wore at an event in 2011, an upgrade by swapping the original belt for one from Jenny Packham’s 2018 collection.
Prince William’s wife sent a message with her dress as guests at the awards ceremony were asked by organisers to “consider the environment when choosing their outfit”.
Kate kept her accessories simple with a pair of dangly earrings, while opting not to carry a handbag.
The Duchess wore her glossy brunette hair in loose curls around one shoulder.
Meanwhile, William was smart in a dark green velvet blazer – also recycled – for the inaugural awards ceremony for his Earthshot Prize, aimed at finding solutions to repair the planet.
Speaking to Femail, stylist Rochelle White said of Kate’s outfit: “Upcycling in fashion is a big thing at the moment but Kate has been known to do this for a while.
“With this look, I feel that she has glammed up the look with the belt.
“The belt itself is eye-catching and adds a bit more sophistication to the dress and look for the event she is attending. It’s by adding a small and simple detail like that, that can transfer an outfit.
“Belts around dresses are making a comeback but in a more trendy way. They were a big thing in the early 2000s, but with the rise of skinnier belts, they are becoming popular.
“I also think with winter around the corner and more people wearing jumper dresses, blanket cardigans and even coats etc belts will be seen more often.”
Royal commentator Natalie Oliveri discussed how guests at the awards ceremony were asked to think of the environment with their fashion choices.
Speaking on Australian breakfast show Today, Ms Oliveri said: “All guests were asked not to buy anything new to attend The Earthshot Prize, and Kate led by example wearing a beautiful Alexander McQueen lilac gown.
“We first saw it 10 years ago, when Prince William and Kate toured North America. They attended an awards ceremony in Los Angeles for the BAFTA awards, and Kate wore that Alexander McQueen gown then.

“Kate often recycles her outfits so it was lovely to see this fan favourite making another appearance.
“As for Prince William, he looked very dapper in this velvet green blazer with a black turtleneck, some are describing him as looking like a James Bond villain, some are saying he looks like 007 himself from the 1960s.
“A really stylish couple walking the green carpet.”
During the awards ceremony, winners were announced from five categories for their innovative green projects from across the globe.
The winners all appeared via video link to give their reaction to receiving £1 million to develop their initiatives by the decade-long award scheme.
At the end of the event, televised by the BBC, the Duke of Cambridge took to the stage to tell the audience: “I want to say something to the young watching tonight.
“For too long, we haven’t done enough to protect the planet for your future, the Earthshot is for you.
“In the next 10 years, we are going to act. We are going to find the solutions to repair our planet.
“Please keep learning, keep demanding change, and don’t give up hope. We will rise to these challenges.”
