The portraits, which show Kate in dresses by Alexander McQueen paired with earrings owned by the Queen and Princess Diana, were taken by world-renowned photographer Paolo Roversi. He said: “Taking the portrait of Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Cambridge, was a true honour for me and a moment of pure joy.

“I was moved by her warmth and friendly welcome and enchanted by her shining eyes that reflected the loveliness of her soul and her smile showing the generosity of her heart.

“It was a profound and rich experience for me, an unforgettable moment. I have met a wonderful person, a person who, with her positive energy, can bring hope to the whole world.”

Roversi is one of the most in-demand photographers in the fashion industry.

The 74-year-old was born in Ravenna, in northern Italy, and fell in love with photography as a teenager.

After starting his working life as a press photographer, he moved into the world of fashion and has captured some of the biggest names, including Naomi Campbell, Emma Watson and Kate Moss.

Royal author Margaret Holder said the earrings the Duchess is wearing hold particular significance.

She said: “For the Duchess of Cambridge’s 40th birthday pictures, she chose two sets of earrings – one from the Queen and one from the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

“The first set shows that she is held in high regard by the Queen, as a loyal and dutiful member of the Royal Family, especially at a time when the House of Windsor is rocked by rifts and scandals.

“Catherine’s 10-year marriage to Prince William has proved solid and their three children show a way forward for the dynasty ‑ some might say the only credible hope for its future.”

Ms Holder added: “The second set harks back to the days of Diana, William and Harry’s lost mother.

“All but forgotten as Charles pushes forward with plans to enhance Camilla’s standing, Diana remains a central figure in her sons’ lives.

“Catherine wears Diana’s sapphire engagement ring. As William said at their own engagement: ‘This was my way of keeping her close to it all.'”

The Duchess is expected to celebrate her birthday privately with her family today due to the current situation with Omicron but could have a bigger joint celebration with William, who turns 40 in June.
