On Sunday, the rules to attend the green carpet were very strict and in tune with the purpose of the whole event. Guests were asked not to buy anything new in order to reduce waste as the fashion industry is known as the second most polluting industry in the world after the fuel industry.

On top of the conscious fashion, no one who attended the award ceremony was flown in, with Prince William and Kate Middleton arriving at the venue in an Aldi electric car.

As people acclaimed Kate for re-wearing an Alexander McQueen dress she first wore after her wedding in 2011, some insiders revealed that Prince William’s trousers were even more ancient.

The Duke of Cambridge reportedly wore a 20-year-old pair of trousers that he paired with a black turtleneck jumper and a dark green velvet jacket he first wore at a charity event for Centrepoint in 2019.

This was the second time this month that Prince William had been spotted wearing velvet.

According to Boohoo MAN, Google demand for “velvet suits” are up by 426 percent after the Duke of Cambridge was seen rocking a super sleek bottle-green velvet suit at the Earthshot Prize Awards.

According to the research conducted by Boohoo MAN, the hashtag #velvetsuit has over 430,000 views on TikTok, and 27,000 posts using #velvetsuit on Instagram.

A spokesperson for Boohoo MAN told Express.co.uk: “Adding the velvet element has the ability to turn any old tux into a super stylish red-carpet-ready fashion statement, and Boohoo MAN believes this is a trend that is here to stay.”

Actress Emma Thompson, who walked the Earthshot Prize Awards green carpet, said it was a “relief” not to buy something new for the occasion.

She chose an emerald green Stella McCartney suit (a luxury brand known for its sustainability) she first wore to Buckingham Palace when she received her damehood for services to drama from Prince William in 2018.

Fellow actress Emma Watson, who presented an award at the ceremony, took the opportunity to put the light on upcycled fashion.

The Harry Potter star was dressed in a garment made from 10 different wedding gowns provided by worldwide charity Oxfam.

In a video played at the event, William said: “We are alive in the most consequential time in human history.

“The actions we choose or choose not to take in the next 10 years will determine the fate of the planet for the next thousand.

“Many of the answers are already out there… but we need everyone – from all parts of society – to raise their ambition and unite in repairing our planet.
