Tory MP Sir David Amess was attacked on Friday at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea. It is understood the MP who represents Southend West in Essex was attacked by a man who walked into his constituency surgery and stabbed him multiple times.

Mr Amess is believed to be receiving treatment at the scene for his injuries.

Eastwood Road North in Leigh-on-sea has been closed by police between Bellhouse Lane and Oakwood Avenue due to the incident.

LBC’s political editor Theo Usherwood said: “David Amess was holding a survey at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea when a man is reported to have run in the church and stabbed the MP several times.

“Emergency services are at the scene and we understand from Essex Police that they are investigating.”

Essex news reported armed police were on the scene, tweeting: “The Conservative MP for Southend West, Sir David Amess has been stabbed while attending a constituency surgery.

“69-year-old Sir David was attacked at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea – Armed police are on scene and roads in the area has been shut.”
